Littleport Women’s Institute: Looking back at 99 years so far!

After over a year of restrictions Littleport Women’s Institute is pleased to be back in harness and meeting in person once again. Throughout the menace of Covid we managed to maintain a good amount of contact with members via newsletters and indeed meetings via Zoom. For many of us Zoom was a challenge, as new technology was not foremost in our years of education, but we do like to keep abreast of current trends as…

Littleport Women’s Institute: WI Cleans Up!

The Littleport village sign was donated by the Littleport WI back in 2001. Replacing the original sign also given to the village in 1984 to commemorate the WI’s 75th anniversary, this one is made of good British Oak. Sculpted by Jeremy Turner it has scenes depicting Littleport’s history and associated interests – from the Riot, Hope Brothers factory, to the direction to Welney! WI Programme Secretary Cynthia Leggat volunteered to spruce it up before winter…

Littleport Women’s Institute Takes a trip Down Memory Lane

How many people remember the WI Concert Party? We thought about it and decided it was a good idea. It was a great success! There were 20-25 members involved. We did sketches, poems and songs from the roaring twenties and popular shows. We performed around other villages and said we were on tour. We had no problem getting an audience. They clapped when things were right and even louder when things went horribly wrong. Doreen…

In 2022 Littleport Women’s Institute will be 100

Long-standing WI Member Ann White gives us a resume of their activities. And she says “It’s not all jam and Jerusalem.” Looking back over the years, fashion has changed and ways of communication have developed to emails and zoom meetings, but the same principles remain. No politics, no religion, just friendship. Littleport WI was busy in the war time as were other WI’s throughout the country. We knitted socks and balaclavas to be sent to…

Littleport Women’s Institute – Still Going Strong Through the Recent Lockdown

Any group or organisation is as strong as its constituent parts – its individual members. And Littleport WI has demonstrated that in a manner reminiscent of the old World War 2 spirit and its refusal to be down- hearted aftermath! WI Secretary Ms Linda Whytock recounted just some of the huge efforts made by the members during what was for many a truly isolating experience. Not everyone had a significant other with whom they could…

Littleport Women’s Institute

Why become part of the Women’s Institute? Following my retirement, I joined the WI as a way of getting to know people, and be involved in village life but it’s turned out to be so much more than that. If you were to ask people their concept of members they would most likely answer, it’s silver-haired pensioners sipping tea, well yes some of us are and do, but many of the ladies from young women…

Littleport Women’s Institute – Jam and Jerusalem?

A member of the Littleport Women’s Institute writes: We do sing the beautiful hymn Jerusalem, but make jam? No, I have not made jam in all the time I have been a member which is over 10 years. Apart from our speakers, demonstrators, entertainment etc which we enjoy at our monthly meetings; we receive invitations to other Institutes. We make frequent visits to place of interest, or outings simply for entertainment, and often invite guests…
