The yearly Littleport 10k run on July 26th turned out to be a triumph for one particular local man. The seasoned and serious Ely Club runner, Matt Holmes of Holmes Furnishers shop fame had clocked a personal best to finish in 21st place.
“It has been my ambition to run under 40 minutes, and I can’t believe I did it in a time of 39 minutes and 12 seconds,” Matt told Littleport Life. And in keeping with family tradition, Matt’s children Toby and Isabelle were seen competing in the 1.5k fun run competition. Six year old Toby finished 16th in a time of 8.22, while Isabelle was placed 21st clocking 9.02.
This ever popular event which was sponsored by Saffron Insurance Brokers had attracted 157 runners with the main winner’s medal going to Newmarket Joggers’ runner and former jockey, Paul Holley who totally blasted the 10k field in a impressive winning time of 34.15, while Simon Fraser representing St Albans Striders finished 2nd in a time 35.5, and Royston Runners’ Warren Armstrong finished 3rd in a time of 35.57.
The first placed woman Sian-Marie Lucas from Haverhill Running Club beat last year’s winner Lisa Marriott from Ramsey Road Runners Club by 1 minute and 2 seconds to take top spot in a time of 40.40. Nene Valley Harriers’ Louise Blake clinched third place clocking 45.37.
The 1.5k Children’s Fun Run started off with Ely Runners’ Dana Fraser (10) taking an early lead only to be beaten by the impressive March AC runner Hugo Bryant (13) who won 1st place in a time of 5.55. Fraser clinched 2nd in a time of 6.06, and another March AC runner Luke Gardner (9) sealed 3rd spot in a time of 6.08.
