The Stuart Seekings Memorial Cup competition held over three days was won by Ely City who defeated Littleport Town FC 3-1 in the final at Littleport Leisure Centre on Thursday 20th August. Both Littleport and Ely defeated Isleham and Little Downham 7-1 respectively to reach the final.
There were some glimpses of good football being played when Ely City fielding a mixtures of Under 18’s, 1st and reserve team players dressed in an very old fashioned round necked Liverpool looking all red strip took on a new look Littleport team who had lost last year’s Manager Oscar Fuller due to ill health and a few players to boot.
17 year old Finley Logan who usually turns out for Town and doubles up as Littleport Town’s cricketer was Ely’s captain on the night. They had some excellent talented youngsters on show. 19 year old Luke Brown scorer of City’s first goal and 19 year old Dominique Hunt heading the 3rd and what was to be the eventual winning goal ran out eventual worthy winners.
Littleport’s James Linney had equalised on the stroke of half-time, and again like last year’s Memorial matches, Littleport goalkeeper Stuart Rollings in his glow in the dark yellow shirt was again outstanding saving anything and everything that City threw at him. And centre half Callum Butcher who had played 4 matches in 4 days was awesome at the heart of Littleport’s defence despite the defeat.
Afterwards Littleport Town’s Bob Bowditch naturally gave a very emotional speech and Stuart’s Mum, Julie Lewis who had flown back from holiday especially to be at the match presented the winners Ely City with the trophy. The organisers of this now yearly event were delighted to have announced that they had raised £247.00 which went to Stuart Seekings’ favoured charity – the Brain Tumour Cancer Charity.
