Every year the 363MCC biker fraternity host a wonderful fundraiser while everybody has fun!
This is the famous ‘Crowning Around’ event that is a May Day celebration with a difference!
This year the date for your diary is May 5 and 11.00 hours GMT venue; Littleport’s historic Crown Inn on the corner of Crown Lane and Main Street.
And there will be a flypast at a time to be advised nearer the date when you will find more details on their Facebook page – and in the Ely Standard.
The money is always presented to local charities like the East Anglian Air Ambulance and the PULSE initiative that pays for medical equipment for the local medical centre.
Mark Robinson, President of the Club says, ”We are doing it all again! Bikes, bands and beer, all for raising a bit of cash for charities and good causes! Come along and help us out!”
The Club is named in honour of the men – and some women – who after meeting at the Crown for the usual count up of the mutual welfare pot, to see what benefits they could share with their neighbours who were all having a hard time just finding a little food to feed themselves and their families, to discover there was nothing.
This was May 22, 1816 when the Napoleonic Wars were over – but no work for the returning troops who lived off labour on the land. They decided to march on Ely to demonstrate their plight.
After days of unrest, many were arrested – and many convicted. 5 men from Littleport were hanged.
This is a village that remembers and reveres its past.
For more information on the Littleport Riots, the Littleport Society has material and are open Tuesday afternoons upstairs at the Barn over the parish council offices and will be pleased to talk to you on the subject as well.
